WILDLAND ENGINES

Many areas in the Salt Lake Valley are in what is considered the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). The residents and businesses in these are currently provided fire and emergency medical protection by the existing stations that house various fire apparatus. These apparatus are primarily designed for structure fire and staffed with structure qualified personnel. As the populace is continuing to build in the interface areas and extended long-term drought conditions continue, a need for

an increased level of wildland fire protection in the Salt Lake Valley has become apparent.

The Unified Fire Authority is currently in the process of creating a wildland engine task force consisting of a number of type III
wildland engines, water tender(s), and various support and command vehicles for use in the Salt Lake Valley. Some of these
engines will also be made available as national resources through the Northern Utah Interagency Fire Center.

The UFA Wildland Division currently has two Type III engines available for dispatch as a national resource. Staffing includes one Full Time UFA firefighter as Engine Boss and three seasonal firefighters.
